About Health Calculators
Easily understandable tools, based on scientific principles to help you understand your body and make healthier life choices.
Our Mission
We run Health Calculators from just one simple goal: to make dependable health tools based on science available to everyone. We believe everyone should be able to understand their own body and make the right choices regarding their health--whether they are poor or rich, live here or there, and go to see a doctor or not.
Health info is everywhere now good, bad or just puzzling. So we focus on getting you honest, research-backed calculators and explanations that actually make sense. Everything we build is not only oriented towards but also written to help you grasp control of your health journey, instead of simply firing figures at you.
We know health isn't a one-size-fits-all thing. No single number can tell your whole story. That’s why we encourage using several tools at the same time, seeing the big picture and weighing the data with how you really feel--your energy level, vitality and general spirit. Our tools are intended to kick-start conversation and increase awareness, as opposed to replacing medical advice or even a diagnosis.
Our Methodology
Formulas based on evidence
All of our calculators employ formulas which have been tried and tested through legitimate, scientific research.
BMI Calculator
Conventional Body Mass Index formula: weight (kg) / height (m)²--which for most people is a healthy range. At invented it in 1832, later standardized by the WHO. While BMI doesn't tell you everything (muscle vs. fat, for example), it does provide a good yardstick to screen weight-related risks for most people.
Body Fat Calculator
This provides two simple ways to calculate body fat:
- I used a few measures (neck, waist, and hips) based on US Navy method. The US Navy approach tries to account for gender differences, and provides a reasonable estimate free of fancy equipment.
- Method Based on BMI: Combine BMI, age and sex in order to have a rough idea. Not perfect, but much better than nothing.
BRM Calculator
We provide two formula options:
- The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation (Recommended): It was created in 1990 and found to be more accurate for today's populations.
- The Harris-Benedict Equation: A classic from 1919 (updated in 1984). It still holds up well, but can for some users slightly overestimate.
Limits Of Transparency
We value transparency. On every calculator page you can find:
- Complete details on accuracy and ranges of error, leukocyte health
- The group who each formula works best (or worst) for
- Factors that might make the results distorted, for instance dehydration and measuring errors.
- When to get professional evaluation
- How to interpret results in their cultural contexts
Educational Content
We also provide interesting articles explaining the science behind how each tool works, what can be deduced from its results, and some common mistakes to avoid. All of it is written in simple language so you can suss out what's going on--not from memory sticking numbers in slots.
